Black Friday

We're at my mom's house in the Berkshires for thanksgiving weekend. Had a nice time with the whole family yesterday. Last night Randy and I decided to go to the movies. We went to see Four Christmases, which was funny and cute.
My niece C called the house after she arrived home with her sister and mom to report that people were already in line at Best Buy at 9pm last night, waiting for the doorbuster tickets they would be handing out at 3am. Sure enough, we drove by and there were 10 people in line, some with tents. Wow, now I'm a good bargain hunter, but holy moly that is commitment.
Did any of YOU actually get any good deals between 4am-7am this morning?

There is nothing - NOTHING - that could put my ass outside a Best Buy or Wal-Mart at that ungodly hour of the day. Good Lord, I try to stay out of those places on normal, boring days, but Black Friday? You have to be a special kind of crazy to get involved in that.

Speaking of which, did you hear a worker was trampled at a Wal-Mart on Long Island on Friday morning? And then when the police wanted to close the store to investigate, people kept right on shopping. Unbelievable.

Telecommuting, and vacation plans

Telecommuting is awesome. The biggest upside to our company being bought 2 1/2 yrs ago is the ability to work from home. I don't abuse it and always get a lot more work done (no interruptions) and it's great for big projects. So, with yesterday's 9 incher, that's what I did. Randy works in downtown Boston and they said, hey, if you're not essential, don't come in. He didn't have brain surgery scheduled and neither did I (he's a regional VP and I'm a sales analyst), so we stayed home and did what we needed to get done. I always feel a little guilty or "weather-wimpy" in storms, but then I think, most employees at my corporation are women, most of them are moms, and most of them stayed home because it was a snow day. Yucky sloppy slop

I live near the coast, so instead of the 8"-to-10" of snow my neighbors to the west have the pleasure of cleaning up this fine evening, I had the unusual experience of shoveling and salting the sidewalks around the house, part of the driveway, and the stairs... IN THE DRIVING RAIN . It soaked my coat and hat all the way through. My boots are nice and drenched for tomorrow morning's commute. I can't recall a time when I have ever shoveled in the rain. It felt like 6" of snow, but was packed down to about 3" of yucky-dirty-heavy-brown-sloppy slop-slop waterlogged snow. Add to that the great joy of discovering that one of my neighbors hadn't scooped up after the dog. Nothing like throwing a nice heavy load with a nice load in it. Even though it's pouring down rain outside, it's about to deep freeze, so instead of spending 4 hours out there chopping at the ice like I did on Christmas Eve, I decided I'd rather sleep tomorrow morning. NYC Trip

Weekend in New York...my early birthday present from Randy (REALLY early, but what's time got to do with it when it's this great?!) We haven't been there together since the night Saddam Hussein was captured, so we were WELL overdue. I'm a huge Allman Brothers fan...love the music, love what it represents to me - great fun in the summertime and great times with my friends in bands past. The Holy Grail of Allman Brothers concerts is their annual run at the Beacon Theater in New York City. This year marks the 40th anniversary of this band. Yeah you might think Gregg Allman Marries Cher from the 70's and all that stuff, but these guys play freestyle, always mixing up the tunes and bringing in guests and just awesome on the stage. Anyway, Randy scored tickets (at face value no less), got us tickets for the Acela train, and a free stay at the Waldorf Astoria thanks to all his Hilton points. Pictures anyone?
